Ugrasen Ki Baoli, Delhi- By Hariom Jindal

I recently had an opportunity to visit Ugrasen Ki Baoli in New Delhi. I had once learnt about this place from the newspaper, and It had been on my list to visit for a long time. Some movies were also shot here as well. Although there are no known historical records to prove who built Agrasen ki Baoli, it is believed that it was originally built by the legendary king Agrasen during the Mahabharat epic era and was rebuilt in the 14th century by the Agrawal community, which traces its origin to Maharaja Agrasen.
The place made me wonder how deep and profound knowledge designers had in the past when science was not so developed. It also informed of the skilfulness of workers of that period to execute the design. The steps lead deep into the earth. That there was no darkness found at the deep of the well, speaks highly of the architect and designs. Water used to be stored in these step wells in earlier times.
It is located at Haily Road, Near Modern School on Barakhamba Road, Delhi, and just 1-5 Kms from Connaught Place.
This place opens at 9 AM and closes at 6.30 PM during summer. Visitors should plan a trip accordingly. The place is well maintained and visitors should not spoil its beauty by littering the place. They should also carry water bottles, as the steps climbing down and up can exhaust a person.
